The Size Distribution of Chinese Cities

This paper uses Chinese urban data to investigate two important issues regarding city size distribution: the nature in which cities of different size grow relative to each other, and which distribution is the best approximation of city size distribution. First, we examine how cities of different sizes grow relative to each other. While most empirical literatures suggest that relative size and r...

Mono-Size Distribution Index (MSDI): A new criterion for the quantitative description of size distribution

Graphical size distribution is widely used in different fields of science and studies related to powders, droplets, bubbles, and pores. However, in some condition it may also be necessary to express the size distribution quantitatively. In spite of there being several suggested ways to quantify size distribution in the literature, some of these approaches are not applicable for many methods and...

Explaining the size distribution of cities: Extreme economies

The empirical regularity known as Zipf’s law or the rank-size rule has motivated development of a theoretical literature to explain it. We examine the assumptions on consumer behavior, particularly about their inability to insure against the city-level productivity shocks, implicitly used in this literature. With either selfinsurance or insurance markets, and either an arbitrarily small cost of...

Allometric scaling, size distribution and pattern formation of natural cities

There has been a strong interest in more cogent definitions on economies of scale to reveal general urban growth laws and to develop urban performance metrics. Unstructured data, including satellite images, will provide us with new sources to do so by defining cities as aggregates of human activities. Such a uniform definition on the basis of nighttime light clusters is more consistent and econ...

The Nexus of Income and Size Distribution of Chinese Cities , 1984 - 2003

We estimate the distribution dynamics of city income and size in China during 1984-2003 using stochastic kernel. Our results show that intra-distribution mobility are significant in both income and size and provide evidences on China experienced internal brain drain.
